How To Care For And Clean Your Diamond Engagement Ring At Home

Do you wear your engagement ring loud and proud daily? If you do, your ring can get dirty easily because of many factors. Simple everyday activities, like applying lotion and perfumes plus daily chores, can lead to dirt, oil, and grime on your ring. If you have your ring on when you clean or shower, your ring collects soap, shampoo and other products. Dust and other aerial residue also gets stuck in between tiny crevices of your ring setting. Finally, wear and tear is also something that really happens over time and you will notice that your ring might start to look dull. But this doesn’t mean you should stop wearing your engagement ring! You can take measures to help preserve your ring. Here are some helpful tips on how to care for and clean your ring regularly.

Cleaning Your Ring

(1) In a bowl, mix in room temperature water and mild soap, like dish washing liquid. You may also use mild detergent.

(2) Soak the ring in the mixture for about 15 to 20 seconds. This will help soften and loosen up stuck residue.

(3) Use a soft bristled brush, like a toothbrush, to gently scrub the diamond ring and band.

(4) Rinse the ring thoroughly.

(5) Pat the ring dry with a soft lint-free cloth, or leave it to try on top of the cloth.

Other Care Tips

(1) When cleaning your engagement ring, avoid using any products harsh ingredients. These can damage the metal and affect the clarity of the diamond. Always choose mild soap or cleaner.

(2) For any time you want to wipe your engagement ring, try to use lint-free cloth at all times. Avoid other types of cloth because some cloth fibers can get stuck or leave residue. Other types of cloth, especially rough ones, can leave scratches.

(3) There is no specific rule, but you can clean your engagement ring at home as often as once a week, especially if you use it daily. Or, you can also just clean it as you see fit, for example, when you notice that it’s starting to look dull.

(4) Store your ring properly. When you are not using your engagement ring, keep it in its jewelry box or in a soft cloth pouch–usually the one provided by the maker. This will safeguard the ring from external elements and getting scratched.

(5) Avoid allowing your engagement ring to get in contact with harsh chemicals such as ammonia and chlorine as these can damage both the diamond or stone and the metal.

(6) Handle your ring with care. Avoid wearing your ring when you know you will be doing activities that might expose the ring to impact. These can cause scratches and the diamond setting can get loose, too. The last thing you want is for the diamond or stones to fall off.
